The morning routine of an entrepreneur*
*I don't have a morning routine
I was on the fence about whether or not I should even write this post. My "routine" is ever-changing, so I can't just run down a daily list of things I do while I gently start my day. Some mornings I have early meetings, some I sleep a little later after a night of performance. I also have an erratic sleep schedule, some nights staying up until 2 or 3, some nights falling asleep before midnight.
Upon closer inspection, though, I realized I do have a few tasks I complete just about every morning, regardless of what my day has in store for me:
Drink a cup of warm lemon water
If I'm working from home:
Do any dishes left from the night before
Wipe down and sweep the kitchen
If I have some time:
Spend thirty minutes to an hour in the greenhouse/garden
The warm lemon water is something I read about in several publications a few years ago. It's supposed to be a great way to jumpstart your liver with a sort of detoxifying rinse, and it's beneficial to drink water soon after waking up.
Coffee, oh, coffee. I've always been a percolator kind of gal, and over the years I've gone from plug-in electric models to a vintage enamel-coated stovetop version. I've had all sorts of fancy coffee and science coffee, but cowboy coffee is my favorite.
I used to be much more strict about having the entire house spotless before going to bed. Living with someone who doesn't give a fig for organization or museum-level cleanliness has forced me to adjust my perspective, so the full kitchen cleanup happens in the morning when Bill and Sapo The Dog are still sleeping. If I have an early meeting, I do it when I get home.
I haven't spent too much time on calligraphy lately, but I'm looking forward to getting it back in the rotation. The garden and greenhouse have been taking the majority of my attention, but I'm about to start planting, and that means less intensive maintenance.
Even though I had some hesitation about writing something seemingly mundane, I'm glad I discovered that I do, in fact, have a small routine in the morning. I'm not sure why, but it's comforting to know.
What's your morning routine? I'm a married woman with no kids and a demanding but flexible work schedule, so my list is short and likely laughable to people with out-of-the house jobs and multiple children. I'm curious if you busy parents out there have any small rituals or morning habits, whether intentional or subconscious, that prepare you for the demands of the day?
